unwritten: terms of use

Version 1, 1 November 2026

These are the terms for using unwritten, the writing app, and your account at unwrittenmind.com. They're written to be read. If anything is unclear, write to me at michael@unwrittenmind.com.

unwritten is made by Michael. In these terms "I" and "me" mean the person who makes unwritten and runs unwrittenmind.com, and "you" means you, the writer.

1. Agreeing to these terms

By using unwritten you agree to these terms. If you make an account at unwrittenmind.com, you'll be asked to agree to them there, and again when a new version comes out.

You need to be 18 or over to make an account.

2. Free and Pro

unwritten comes as Free and as Pro.

Free is free. It can be downloaded from unwrittenmind.com once it's released, and you can write with it with no account. A copy you've installed keeps working on your computer as it is, even if unwritten or unwrittenmind.com stops, though future versions of your computer's system may stop it working (section 13).

Pro is one or more plans that add to Free. For now, Pro is offered free, by invitation (section 9). Nothing is sold.

3. Using unwritten

unwritten is yours to use for your own writing, including writing you're paid for or publish. Install it on any of your own computers, on any system it's available for.

It's personal, for you alone. Please don't install it for friends, family or colleagues, or across a company, and don't share your account. Each of them is welcome to their own.

If an account looks shared, I may get in touch to ask. Nothing is cut off automatically.

4. Your writing is yours

Everything you write in unwritten is yours. So is everything you bring in, and everything you make with the assistant or the AI helpers. Neither unwritten nor unwrittenmind.com claims any of it.

You're responsible for having the right to use what you bring in: for example, another author's book that you use to make a skill.

5. Who owns unwritten

unwritten itself, the app, its name, its design and its words, belongs to me, its maker. Using it doesn't make any of that yours. What you write with it is yours (section 4).

6. What leaves your computer

Your books stay on your computer, and unwritten never sends them to me. Three things leave your computer only when you choose them:

  • AI. Text you ask the assistant or the AI helpers to work on goes to the AI service you connected, under that service's own terms.
  • Keeping a book online. Your book goes to your own private place on GitHub or GitLab.
  • Links. A web page you paste a link to is read from the web.

The privacy notice says exactly what the app sends to unwrittenmind.com and what the site keeps about you.

7. AI services

AI can be wrong. Read what it suggests before you use it.

What an AI service charges is between you and that service, under your own key or plan. unwritten's spending limit is there to help you keep track. It isn't a promise about what a service will charge.

8. What you may not do

Please don't:

  • sell, rent or hand out copies of unwritten yourself: point people to unwrittenmind.com instead, so they get the latest version;
  • get round the plans or the sign-in, or unlock what your plan doesn't include;
  • take the app apart, except as far as the law always lets you.

9. Pro, by invitation

For now, Pro is offered free, to people I invite. This is unwritten's beta. Your invitation says from when and until when you can use it. Pro may change, have faults, or end.

You don't have to keep it secret: talk about it as you like. Just don't pass on your invitation, or anything only invited people can download.

When Pro ends for you, your work stays on your computer, and you can still read everything you made. Free keeps working.

10. If Pro is sold one day

If there's demand, Pro may one day be sold. Any sale would be made by a separate legal entity (a UK limited company), under its own terms, which you'd agree to before paying anything. Using unwritten now, free, doesn't entitle you to keep Pro free, to a refund, to any payment or share in unwritten, or to any other commercial obligation of any kind.

11. Feedback

Thank you for every note you send. Feedback is how unwritten gets better, and yours shapes what comes next. I may use any idea you send, and once I do, it becomes part of unwritten for everyone. I'm glad to thank people by name when I can, but sending feedback, or taking part in the beta, doesn't come with payment or a share in unwritten.

12. Keep your own copies

unwritten takes snapshots of your book as you work, so you can go back to an earlier one. Even so, computers fail. Keep your own backups of anything that matters to you.

13. Availability

unwritten is a personal project, given free of charge and as it is, for your writing. There's no promise to keep it maintained, updated or supported for any length of time, Free included.

The site, accounts and Pro may be changed, paused, restarted or stopped at any time, and may not be there at any particular moment. If the site closes, accounts and what the site keeps may be deleted. Where reasonably practicable, I'll give notice first.

Your writing is never affected: it's on your computer, and an installed copy of unwritten keeps working as it is, without the site (though future versions of your computer's system may stop it working). A Pro plan keeps working offline until its end date, then becomes Free.

14. No promises, and responsibility

unwritten is provided "as is" and "as available", with no promises of any kind, stated or implied. I can't promise it will run without interruption, without errors, or free of anything harmful. You use it at your own risk.

As far as the law allows, I'm not responsible for any loss that comes from using it, or from not being able to use it. That includes lost or damaged work.

Nothing in these terms limits any responsibility that the law doesn't allow to be limited, or takes away your rights as a consumer where you live.

15. Ending your account

You can stop using unwritten at any time, and ask me to remove your account (the privacy notice says how).

If you break these terms, I may close your account. Your work on your computers is never touched, and Free keeps working.

16. New versions of these terms

Each version has a number and a date. Earlier versions stay readable on unwrittenmind.com.

When a new version comes out, the site will ask you to agree to it next time you visit. Until you do, the plan you have keeps working until it next renews or ends, but nothing new is added to your account.

17. The law

These terms are under the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear any dispute. If you live somewhere else, you keep the consumer protections your own country gives you, and you can bring a claim there.
